Where to stay in Hoi An: best accommodation in Hoi An by neighborhood

The choice of accommodation and neighborhood when planning a trip can really affect your experience of the city. The same happens for accommodation in Hoi An. There are a few options regarding where to stay in Hoi An: as a first timer, you may want to go to the very center and stay in the Old Town, but hold your horses! There are other options that may suit your traveling style better. Keep reading to find out the best accommodation in Hoi An and choose your the one that suits best your travel style and budget.

Travel tip: accommodation in Hoi An is very cheap compared to other countries so sometimes the difference between a budget or a mid range hotel is not so different. If you are not in a very tight budget, it may be a good idea to upgrade to a better accommodation for just a few more euros. That being said, hostels are still the best option if you want to socialize with other travellers.

Best accommodation in Hoi An by neighborhood

Old Town

The most convenient area to stay in Hoi An is the Old Town. The lack of traffic, beautiful yellow houses and silk lanterns and the proximity to (mostly) all the attractions in the city makes of this area the number one for accommodation in Hoi An. That being said, it is the most expensive neighborhood and it can get very busy with tourists in high season (and, according to my experience, also in low season), so if you’re looking for a more quiet experience, perhaps other neighborhoods may be better for you.

Budget: Tribee Bana Heritge Hostel

If you’re on a tight budget, try Tribee Bana Heritge Hostel, with a very central location among Hoi An’s top attractions, restaurants, bars and shops. It offers both dorm-type and private rooms and includes a free buffet breakfast.

Mid-range: Little Riverside Hoi An

If you’re looking for a taste of luxury for a decent price, book a room at Little Riverside Hoi An, a beautiful hotel with one of the greatest views in the city (from the swimming pool!). Double rooms start at 145€, which may fall in the high end category, but you can get them for 80€ if you have the Genius status at Booking.com. Rooms include a great continental breakfast and free bike rental.

High end: Anantara Hoi An Resort

If you’re looking for luxury in a resort-style hotel but you don’t want to compromise on the location, your best option is Anantara Hoi An Resort, a 5-star riverside resort hotel located a few meters from the ancient UNESCO Heritage Old Town. The hotel, built in French colonial architecture, offers a wide range of activities, including Vietnamese lessons, Chinese painting workshop, boat trips along the river and walking tours on nearby attractions. Of course, they also have a spa that offers massages and beauty treatments and a beautiful swimming pool. Rooms start at 121€ for a double room.

Surroundings: Cam Pho & Cam Chau

Personally I prefer to stay slightly outside of the Old Town, in the Cam Pho or Cam Chau neighborhoods, where you can rest from the hordes of tourists that crowd the Old Town in the high seasons. In both of these neighborhoods, you’ll be surrounded by much more local restaurants and you’ll still be walking distance from the main attractions.

Disclaimer: I have included here some hotels that are part of the Old Town neighborhood (Son Phong) but are not directly inside of the ancient part of the city (Minh An).

Budget: Tribee Cotu Hostel

Keeping with the same brand, try out Tribee Cotu Hostel, located in the heart of the Cam Pho district, offering both dorm-style and private rooms, a common kitchen, breakfast and swimming pool access. It is walking distance from the major attractions of the Old Town. Private rooms start at 17 and a bed in a dorm room starts at 7€.

Mid-range: Vinci Villa Hoi An

Vinci Villa Hoi An is, by far, my favourite accommodation in Hoi An regardless of the budget. It is actually located IN the same quarter as the Old Town, in an alley slightly removed from the action, which makes it the perfect spot for me. This wonderful family-run hotel is a 5-minute walk from the Old Town main attractions, has a nice swimming pool that is very welcome after a day under the Vietnamese sun, a tiny little jungle-like garden and comfortable rooms (starting at 18€ for a double room, but includes a delicious breakfast for 22€) and it includes the bike! Best of all, the staff in this hotel is absolutely charming, especially the host, who is always happy to start a conversation!

Travel tip: try the home made Cao Lau and banana pancakes…Delicious!

High end: Hotel Royal Hoy An – McGallery

For luxury turn to Hotel Royal Hoy An – McGallery, an old school riverside 5-start hotel with colonial architecture, great views, amazing rooms and a swimming pool with a beautiful mosaic. The 40 m2 Deluxe room with King size bed starts at 91€ and you can add breakfast for 10€ a day (which in Vietnam is a little fortune). The higher-floor rooms have a fantastic view over the river and the An Hoi islet.

An Hoi

If you’re looking for nightlife, your best option is the An Hoi district, located in a small island in across from the Old Town. During the day the quarter is quite chill, but it comes alive at night with the Night Market and several riverside bars and restaurants (although I must say, it is 100% targeted for tourists, so don’t expect a local experience).

Budget: The Imperfect Downtown & Bar

If you’re looking to meet people and get some party on, your perfect choice is (ironically) The Imperfect Downtown & Bar, a new hostel located in the heart of the buzz in An Hoi where you can meet people, party, swim in the pool and sleep in an air conditioned room for as little as 5€.

Mid-range: Lantana Boutique Hoi An Hotel

If you want to spend a little more and get more comfort for your money, you should have a look at Lantana Boutique Hoi An Hotel. It is located on the northern side of An Hoi, overlooking the Cam Pho neighborhood, so it is not as noisy as the eastern part of the island. However, you can bring yourself to the heart of the party in An Hoi, check out the Night Market or visit Hoi An’s Old Town in just a few minutes walk. It has a covered (yet still outdoors) swimming pool, rooms with balconies overlooking the river and an in-house spa. Double rooms start at 41€.

Although less spectacular, you can get great value at Flamingo Villa Hoi An, located nearby and offer similar (but less elegant) characteristics. Rooms start at 21€.

High end: Hoi An Silk Marina Resort & Spa

If you’re looking for luxury, try out the Hoi An Silk Marina Resort & Spa. It is also located in the northern riverbank of An Hoi but far away of the noise and drunk tourists yet only 7 minutes away from the Ancient Town. It has a gigantic pool and a nice view of the river. They offer a spa and wellness center, a buffet style restaurant and they can arrange transportation from the airport (for a fee). Rooms start at 120€.

An Bang Beach

If you are looking for a relaxing and tanning resort-type holidays, An Bang Beach should be your choice. As I said on my Hoi An main post, I don’t believe that Vietnam is, per se, a beach destination, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a nice tan and a refreshing dip in the South China Sea. An Bang Beach checks all the boxes for a beach vacation: a long beach with space for all the tourists, seaside restaurants and bars and cold international cocktails! And even though it is not in the center of Hoi An, you can be there in a few minutes by bike (it is really easy to get there!).

Budget: An Bang Beach Town Homestay

Usually in the budget range I tend to suggest beds in a hostel, since they are typically more economic. In Vietnam the differences are very little and, in this case, I’d like to suggest a homestay for very little more than a bed in a hostel. In An Bang Beach Town Homestay you can get a private double room, a common terrace with bamboo furnitures and strings of lights and walking distance to the beach for only 13€ a night.

Mid-range: An Nhien Homestay & An Bang Coco Villa

Continuing with the homestay options, An Nhien Homestay offers a more luxurious feel to the accommodation, with beautifully decorated rooms, a nice swimming pool and all in the nice cozy size of a homestay. You can get a double room there for as little as 22€ per night if you have the Genius rank at Booking.com, and for 2 more euros you can add an exceptional breakfast.

Another great option is An Bang Coco Villa, an upscale bed & breakfast in a gorgeous setting with colonial architecture, a nice swimming pool, continental breakfast and only 150m from An Bang Beach.

High end: Palm Garden Beach Resort & Spa

If you really want to splurge, your best choice is Palm Garden Beach Resort & Spa, a 5-star resort hotel with a beautiful beachfront garden, gorgeous wooden rooms, swimming pool and just in front of Cua Dai Beach. Guests can enjoy spa treatments and massages, snorkelling, volleyball and a beachfront restaurant serving seafood as well as a terrace café serving Vietnamese specialties. They also offer a free shuttle between the beach and Hoi An Ancient Town. Double rooms with garden view and included breakfast start at 102€.
