Game of Thrones locations that you can visit in Croatia
I am a HUGE fan of ‘Game of Thrones’ and the A Song of Ice and Fire saga. I think the adaptation of the show, especially on the first seasons, is one of the best adaptation work in the history of TV. And of course an important part of that is choosing right where to film the scenes. In that HBO has excelled, choosing some amazing locations for filming the show. I have collected some here that you can visit during your travels, to give a little spice to your trip. Game of Thrones has been filmed in six countries: Croatia, Iceland, Spain, United Kingdom (mostly Northern Iceland), Morocco and Malta. This post will be dedicated to the locations in Croatia. You can go find links to the locations in other countries in the end of the page.
*Disclaimer: if you are not up to date with the show you may find spoilers in this article. Proceed at your own peril!

Croatia
Croatia is where a big part of the show was filmed. The Mediterranean weather, the perfectly preserved Medieval towns and the fantastic coastline make a great stage for King’s Landing and some of the cities in Essos.
Dubrovnik, Croatia (King’s Landing and Qarth)
Dubrovnik is the most known as a GoT filming location (probably you already knew about it). And how could they not choose it? The fantastic preservation of the Old Town gives it the fantastic look for King’s Landing.
When you’re visiting the Old Town you will feel transported, because you will recognize every corner. And don’t forget to reenact Cersei’s walk of “Shame!” in the stairs in front of Saint Ignatius. I sure didn’t forget (with clothes though).
Outside of the walled Old Town of Dubrovnik, you can find Lovrijenac Castle, which acts as the Red Keep of King’s Landing.
The Ethnographic Museum was also used as Littlefinger’s brothel in the scenes where Tyrion meets Oberyn and where the septon is walks naked in the streets.
Dubrovnik is King’s Landing, there’s no doubt, but there is more! It also has been used to film scenes of Qarth. The Minčeta Tower, a defensive fort on the city walls, was used to film the House of the Undying, where Daenerys has to find her stolen dragons and has visions of her future.

Also, the island of Lokrum, in front of Dubrovnik’s shore, was used in many scenes of the city in Essos. The main locations are the botanical gardens and the Benedictine monastery.
If you want to plan your visit to Dubrovnik, I suggest you check out the best things to do in Dubrovnik!
Šibenik, Croatia (Braavos)
The House of Black and White is a set, but many of the scenes in Braavos are filmed in real locations. One of them is the Croatian town of Šibenik, located more or less in the midpoint of Croatia’s coast. The Cathedral of St. Jacob was chosen as the Iron Bank of Braavos in season 5.
Trsteno, Croatia (King’s Landing)
Not everything that happens in King’s Landing happens in the Red Keep. Much of the scheming from the Tyrell family, leaded by the “Queen of Thorns” Olenna Tyrell, happens in the Palace Gardens of King’s Landing, which were filmed in Trsteno, a district of Dubrovnik with fantastic views of the sea.

Kliss Fortress, Croatia (Meereen)
Dubrovnik is not where the filming ends in Croatia, as we saw with the town of Šibenik. Another example of this is Fortress of Kliss, located in a village of the same name near the touristic city of Split. This fortress was used to film the outer terraces of Meereen.

Diocletian’s Palace, Split, Croatia (Meereen)
Still in Meereen, in the city of Split, we can find the basement of the Pyramid where Daenerys locks her dragons Rhaegal and Viserion (‘sigh’) after Drogon kills the shepherd’s child. Later on, she brings the Great Masters of Meereen to meet the dragons to bring some fear. These two scenes where filmed at the basement of the Diocletian’s Palace.

Kaštela, Croatia (Braavos)
The town of Kaštela, also close to Split, was built as a series of private castles to protect wealthy families in case of an Ottoman invasion. One of them, Kaštel Gomilica, was used for the waterfronts of Braavos. “Oysters, clams and cockles!” anyone?
