Game of Thrones locations that you can visit in Morocco

I am a HUGE fan of ‘Game of Thrones’ and the A Song of Ice and Fire saga. I think the adaptation of the show, especially on the first seasons, is one of the best adaptation work in the history of TV. And of course an important part of that is choosing right where to film the scenes. In that HBO has excelled, choosing some amazing locations for filming the show. I have collected some here that you can visit during your travels, to give a little spice to your trip. Game of Thrones has been filmed in six countries: Croatia, Iceland, Spain, United Kingdom (mostly Northern Iceland), Morocco and Malta. This post will only focus on the GoT filming locations in Morocco. You can find links to the rest of the locations in the end of the page.

*Disclaimer: if you are not up to date with the show you may find spoilers in this article. Proceed at your own peril!

Morocco

The desertic Morocco has been used for most of the scenes in the cities of Slaver’s Bay, as well as some scenes of Pentos. The fortified cities and the terracotta buildings add a lot of realism to the warm region of the World of Ice and Fire.

Aït-Ben-Haddou, Morocco (Yunkai and Pentos)

The city of Aït-Ben-Haddou, located around 100 km from Marrakech, is a beautiful ksar (fortified city) near the Moroccan desert. In the show, it was used as the set for Yunkai, one of the cities in Slaver’s Bay that Daenerys conquers, and Pentos, one of the free cities of Essos.

Essaouira, Morocco (Astapor)

Essaouira is a big touristic destination in Morocco, and I completely understand why! The white houses, the shore perfect for surfers and the red fortified wall makes it very popular. Daenerys came to Essaouira (Astapor), where she got the Unsullied in one of the most memorable scenes in the show.

Ouarzazate, Morocco (Pentos)

Not far from Aït-Ben-Haddou you can find Atlas Studios in Ouarzazate, located in the Moroccan desert. Not only it was used to film Game of Thrones (concretely Pentos), but many other movies such as Babel or Asterix & Obeliz: Mission Cleopatra.
