What to do in Rello in Soria, Spain

Rello, as many in this list as it was fashionable during medieval times, is a fortified village located on top of a hill next to a river (Escalote). Unlike other entries in this list, the origin and history of this town is less clear, but that does not take away the amazing sensation of walking through its cobble stone narrow streets. This is probably the lesser known town in this route, but not less stunning.

Things to see in Rello

  • Torre del Agua: a tower next to the wall that was used to collect water from the river Escalote.
  • Castle of Rello: in one of the edges of the wall you can find a castle dating back to the XV century (allegedly) and later on refurbished. However, you can still see the aljibe (water storage) and the keep.
  • Rollo de la Justicia: the town preserves the pillory where they executed fellons during medieval times. Unlike others, this one is made of iron (it is actually an old artillery structure), which promoted the local tongue-twister “El rollo de Rello es de hierro” (The pillory of Rello is made of iron).
  • Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción: a Baroque church built in the XVII century.
  • Off walls: there are some sites of interests in the surroundings of the town, such as Ermita de las Angustias, a small hermitage, or Torre Tiñón, a watchtower used to control the border of the river Duero between Christian and Muslim territory. It is here were Almanzor hid after the battle of Catalañazor (the first stop in this list).

Since Rello is such a small town, there are no restaurants in the area. There is a bar called El Patio. For proper food, check places to eat in nearby towns such as Medinaceli, Berlanga de Duero or Burgo de Osma.
