Where to eat in Copenhagen: Breakfast and Brunch

When I first moved to Copenhagen, the breakfast-brunch culture really shocked me. Being from Spain, where the old-school breakfast is two espressos and a cigarette, the morning ritual of breakfast or brunch at a Danish establishment (or home, for that matter) made me feel overwhelmed (in the best of ways). A breakfast with a delicious porridge with contrasts of sweet jams, crunchy cereals and fresh touch of fruits or herbs; the sense of fulfillment after a well done brunch containing every single element of the food pyramid… it really sets you up for a better day.

Breakfast and Brunch in Copenhagen

On the cheaper side, one of my go-to places for breakfast/brunch/coffee/cake when I am showing the city around to my friends and family is Paludan Bogcafé. Although they don’t necessarily have the best food or coffee in the city (it IS good, though), it is still very enjoyable and their prices are unbeatable. Most of all, I go for the atmosphere; surrounded by old books and vintage furniture. They also have nice lunch and dinner menus and they offer student discounts. It is actually a great place to study and it is not unusual to see groups of students preparing for exams. Another option is Laundromat Café, a fun concept where you can have a coffee, brunch or a full meal while you wait for your clothes to be washed.

In the less touristy side, there are plenty of places for delicious quality breakfast. For coffee and pastry go to Mirabelle, a cozy bakery owned by the Relæ team. Go simple: croissant or sourdough bread. If you want something different and very Danish, try Grød, a store that serves many kinds of porridge. If you prefer breakfast a la carte without robbing a bank, my suggestion would be Dyrehaven, where you can have delicious shakshuka, among many other dishes. For a light breakfast, have delicious toasts at Fætter Fætter.

Brunches are a highlight in Copenhagen, with some establishments really nailing it. An example is Wulff & Konstali, a brunch spot where you can choose 5 or 7 items from a list of 22 including bakery, eggs, fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat and fish and sweets. Good produce, flexibility (which is not common) and taste merge in this Amager establishment. It is worth the ride from the center! Other sites that offer high quality brunch and a nice atmosphere are Union Kitchen, very hip, Kalaset, a Swedish café, or Taxa, a lively café with cozy outdoors seating. If you are ready to spend a bit more, go to Toldboden, a seafront restaurant next to the Little Mermaid that mixes amazing views with a great brunch deal or grill afternoons. Breakfast and brunch are a whole culture on themselves in the Danish capital. Save some time during your trip to start the day the best way possible!
